Cross-taxon congruence between predatory arthropods and plants across Mediterranean agricultural landscapes

چکیده
Although arthropods are among the most diverse, abundant and ecologically important animals in terrestrial ecosystems, they generally neglected biodiversity inventories due to their complex systematics overwhelming diversity, coupled with current decline number of taxonomists. For this reason, several surrogate groups for arthropod diversity have been proposed, plants being identified as a good putative cross-taxon indicator. By sampling three ground-dwelling (rove beetles, ground beetles spiders) 300 sites across 15 landscapes including multiple semi-natural agricultural habitats, we tested habitat-dependence scale-dependence congruence. Plant species richness was poor predictor predatory arthropods. Among predator groups, appeared best potential other predators. This is backed by fact that were extremely diverse all habitats usually easier identify than both rove spiders. Decreasing scale at which congruence improved strength plant not suitable indicator arthropods, vegetation structure played significant role influencing natural habitats. Our results highlight need explore relationships fine habitat resolution scale, strong correlations obtained only taking into account identity.

Modelling pollination services across agricultural landscapes.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Crop pollination by bees and other animals is an essential ecosystem service. Ensuring the maintenance of the service requires a full understanding of the contributions of landscape elements to pollinator populations and crop pollination. Here, the first quantitative model that predicts pollinator abundance on a landscape is described and tested. METHODS Using information ...
متن کاملEvaluating topographic wetness indices across central New York agricultural landscapes
Accurately predicting soil moisture patterns in the landscape is a persistent challenge. In humid regions, topographic wetness indices (TWIs) are widely used to approximate relative soil moisture patterns. However, there are many ways to calculate TWIs and very few field studies have evaluated the different approaches – especially in the US. We calculated TWIs using over 400 unique formulations...

Different kinds of interactions between lizards and plants in the Mediterranean basin have been described. Lizards have shown to »use« plants as a refuge against predators, as a foraging site, as a thermal microhabitat or as a food resource. In the last c...
متن کاملCyanogenesis in plants and arthropods.
Cyanogenic glucosides are phytoanticipins known to be present in more than 2500 plant species. They are regarded as having an important role in plant defense against herbivores due to bitter taste and release of toxic hydrogen cyanide upon tissue disruption, but recent investigations demonstrate additional roles as storage compounds of reduced nitrogen and sugar that may be mobilized when deman...
متن کاملSpatial relationship between ?15N and elevation in agricultural landscapes
Understanding of the nitrogen (N) cycle and its spatial variability is important for managing ecosystems. Soil δ15N, as an important indicator of different soil nitrogen cycling processes, may provide critical information about the spatial variability in soil N cycling. The objective of this study was to examine the dominant landscape scale variability of δ15N, the location of the variability a...
